Types of Valves

Classification of Valves

1. According to the structure, valves are divided into gate valves, globe valves, check valves, ball valves, butterfly valves etc. 

2. According to the material, valves are also divided into cast iron valves, WCB valves, stainless steel valves (201, 304, 316, etc.), chrome steel valves, duplex stainless steel valves, plastic valves etc.

3. According to the function, valves can be divided into shut-off valve, check valve, control valve and so on.

Uses of Valves


Valves can be used for starting or stopping the flow, regulating or throttling flow, preventing backflow, or relieving and regulating pressure in fluid or gaseous handling applications.

Valves Installation

1. The butterfly valves /gate valves/ball valves are Bi-directional, the globe valves/check valves are Unidirectional, which should Install according to the direction of the arrow on the valve.

2. About the butterfly valve, to set up do not use gaskets or sealing rings between flanges. Regarding the flanged gate valve/globe valve/check valve/ball valve, they need gaskets to set up.

3. Before the installation check that the pipe flanges, to which the valves will be fastened, are clean, lined up, and parallel.

1).  Installation on the existing pipeline

Check that the valve can be fitted easily between the flanges.

a). Centre the valve body between the flanges, fit all the bolts, open completely the valve and then screw all the bolts one by one alternatively until valve body and flanges are touching.

b). Close and open the valve to be certain that the disc can turn properly.

c). Open again the disc and tighten the bolts.

2) Installation on new pipeline

a). Put the valve in a closed position between the two flanges. Use some bolts to fasten the valves to the flanges.

b). Fasten the flanges and the valve to the pipeline by welding.                                                                                                            


1. Space out the flanges in order that the valve can pass easily. The disc is in half-opened position


2. Do not fit gaskets between the flanges                                                                                                                  


3. Do not fit gaskets between the flanges


4. Open totally the valve to verify that the pipeline is lined up in the correct way. Tighten the nuts. 

Valves Connection Types

Q 1. Flange Connection

This is the most common form of connection in valves. There's also flat face flange and raised face flange according to customer requirements.

Q 2. Wafer Type Connection

The form of the connection in which the valve and the two pipes are bolted together directly.

Q 3. Butt Welding Connection

A way to connect the valves directly to pipes is by welding.

Q 4. Threaded Connection

This is an easy way to connect and is often used in small valves.

Q 5. Clamp Connection

This is a quick connection method that requires only two bolts and is suitable for low-pressure valves that are often removed.
